Final Report 2006
Hanseboot 2006 sails to success
Good business with yachts, boats and equipment
122,000 visitors at the
47th Hamburg International Boat Show
The exhibitors at the hanseboot 2006 were highly satisfied with their results at the boat show, with a positive mood very much in evidence. Buyers were particularly active in the up-market sector, for both yachts and boats, and for equipment and accessories. Three of the new halls of the Hamburg Fair were completed in readiness for the hanseboot, and provided an excellent setting for the large sailing and motor yachts, plus the hanseboot. Classics zone, generating enthusiasm all round. The 47th Hamburg International Boat Show finished on Sunday after nine days in which it attracted a total of 122,000 visitors (compared with 119,901 in 2005) - this total was achieved despite the storm flood which reached Hamburg in full strength on Wednesday. The hanseboot harbour at Baumwall was fully booked this year with 50 yachts. Altogether 25,000 visitors (versus 30,000 in 2005) came there to view the biggest yachts at this year's Boat Show. There were a particularly large number of younger people (up to 30 years old) who visited the hanseboot for the first time this year. The proportion of first-time visitors was up from 19% to 22%. The high level of expertise of hanseboot visitors was much appreciated by the exhibitors, and confirmed by the results of the visitor survey - 74% of them own a yacht or boat, or a surfboard or kite board. 44% of private visitors made a purchase or booking directly at the hanseboot. There were 115 boat premieres and a total of some 1,200 yachts and boats, and six new "thematic islands", generating a great deal of interest. All in all, 900 exhibitors from 30 nations presented their products from all areas of watersport. There were good opportunities not only for entertainment, but above all for information and direct exchange of opinions with the experts at the hanseboot FREE Beach Lounge as the meeting point for the trend sports scene, the Charter Consulting zone, the Fishing Forum and Dinghy Centre. A special attraction was the hanseboot LIVE Deck, where the latest sports clothing could be tested in the exhibition hall under "rough weather conditions". The 22nd art maritim, under the title of "Maritime Arts from Turkey" displayed some 130 valuable exhibits from four art galleries, museums and collections. Bobby Schenk's Blue Water Seminar was fully booked again, with 150 participants. The Symposium on Yacht Design and Yacht Construction, and the Sports Boat Marina Forum were well attended, underscoring the professional character of the hanseboot. "The upbeat mood in the overall economic situation was also reflected at the hanseboot," said Claus-Ehlert Meyer, Executive Director of the German Boat and Ship Building Association (DBSV), summarising the event. "Most companies reported positive results at the Boat Show. Many of the visitors, particularly in the accessories sector, showed a special interest in high-quality products. This trend was also evident in the yacht sector, where yachts with overall length of 36 foot or more were in particular demand. The positive mood was apparent in nearly all sectors. The good response in the new halls was particularly pleasing - they met with a very positive reception from both exhibitors and visitors." The following are some verbatims from exhibitors: Sailing yachts: John Welding, Nautor's Swan: "Our Swan 82 at the hanseboot harbour was a real crowd puller. Despite the bad weather on some days, the hanseboot went very well for us." Michael Schmidt, HanseYachts AG: "We are very pleased with the hanseboot. Our big 19 metre 630 model met with enormous interest. And the smaller Hanse yachts also sold well." Gerhard Schöchl, Schöchl Yachtbau: "The new hall gave us an ideal position. There was particular interest in yachts upwards of 37 foot." Jürgen Schwern, Dehler Yachtbau: "The quality of visitors is extremely good. The hanseboot is our main source of business, due to its timing. This is where we sell for the coming season." Nils Heyde, Alpha Yachts: "Our Jeanneau sailing yachts attracted a lot of visitors. There were more prospective customers than last year. We are pleased with the result." Dr. Fritz Conyn, Contest Yachten: "This was one of the best boat shows for us - interest in our yachts is up significantly, and sales were good." Magnus Rassy, Hallberg-Rassy: "Visitors came from a wide range of countries, even from Italy and the UK. We made good sales, somewhat more than last year." Yvonne Schlicke, Dufour Yachts: "Our new line is very well received. We made good sales. There were a lot of Scandinavians there, and visitors from Southern Germany." Mike Reuer, Bavaria Yachtbau GmbH: "Things started more quietly than last year, but by the end of the hanseboot we were up to the same good result as last year." Walter Meier-Kothe, Baltic Yachts: "This boat show is really good. We have an unusually large number of very specific inquiries, especially for the larger yachts, that is 70 to 80 foot." Arne Schmidt, Schmidt Yachts GmbH: "The striking point for us this year was that there were not only a lot of visitors from Scandinavia, but also from Russia and Poland." Motor yachts: Frank Schlaack, Sunseeker Germany: "The hanseboot was entirely positive for us. We were able to gain a great many new prospective customers for Sunseeker yachts, and sold a number of large yachts. The Hamburg Boat Show will be very well placed for the future after completion of all of the new exhibition halls." Uwe Brumund, Drettmann GmbH: "The result for us was about equally good as last year. The hanseboot is on the right track with its modernisation and expansion programme." Andree Hennings, Linssen: "This was a highly positive show for us, with big crowds of visitors and lots of deals closed. The hanseboot has developed into the most important boat show for us as Linssen dealers." Siegfried Gründl, Gründl Boat Import: "Bénéteau motor boats sold very well, and we are highly satisfied. We had visitors from North Rhine-Westphalia, many from Southern Germany, from Switzerland, and a lot of Scandinavians. The standard of visitors was excellent." Herbert Sieg, Thalmann Boote & Yachten: "This year's hanseboot was very pleasing for us. We were able to sell a number of large yachts. The mood was significantly better than last year. The visitor numbers were right, both at the hanseboot harbour and in the exhibition hall." Georg Meinelt, Wassersport Prützel: "We are satisfied with the level of interest, and had very good sales talks. We could feel that customers are thinking positive again." Hanseboot Classics: Christian Janik, Kiel Classic: "The hanseboot Classics zone with its special atmosphere was ideal for us. The hanseboot went much better for us than last year." Ingo Rotermund, Boesch: "We had not been at the hanseboot for 20 years. What made us decide to come again was the concept of the hanseboot Classics, and the new exhibition hall. The response was very very good, and the quality level was outstanding." Hanseboot harbour: Klaus Tietze, Cat Sales: "The large number of catamarans on show here meant it was a kind of Cat Centre. The people with real interest came even in rainy weather." Patric Polch, Polch KG, Etap-Boote: "There were lots of visitors interested in the unsinkable Etap 1100 motor yacht. They came to the hanseboot harbour specifically to see it. We are highly satisfied with the way the hanseboot 2006 went." Siegfried Traub, Traub Yachting, Lagoon Catamarans: "The good level of expertise at the hanseboot, including for example events like the Blue Water seminar, ensured that there were Swiss and Austrians there, too." Dinghies/Trend Sports: Tim Jacobsen, FREE Magazine: "We are extremely happy with the hanseboot FREE Beach Lounge. This year it is more compact, and it was well accepted. The NDR 2 concert with Pohlmann on Wednesday was a real blockbuster." Toby Häger, North Kiteboarding, Fanatic: "The hanseboot FREE Beach Lounge is the ideal platform for us." Gerrit Maass, Sailloft Surfsegel: "The timing of the hanseboot is ideal for presentation of material for the coming season." Gero Blank, Aquamarin: "The first weekend was super, and we are highly satisfied. People are hesitant at buying Optimists, but Toppers and Lasers are selling well." Equipment/Accessories: Albert Schweizer, Beilken Segelmacher: "We are very pleased. That must be the best hanseboot since I took over Beilken. The hanseboot is a key factor in our business year." Jochen Reimer, Elvström Sobstad Segelmacher: "The customers are much better informed, and business very much better than last year. Our production is working overtime. We are delighted." Thomas Eissing, Elektronic Essentials, H.E. Eissing KG: "This year's hanseboot was even better for us than last year. We were particularly pleased at the increase in demand for quality. The impending VAT increase made practically no difference to our customers." Reinhold Mörer, Mörer Schiffselektronik: "Sales volume maintains at the same level as in recent years. There is a lot happening in the sector for boats over 12 metres, that is evident." Thies Kölln, Lindemann KG: "We have benefited from increasing demand for yacht equipment. What was particularly pleasing was the high level of expertise of visitors, who approached us with specific questions. We are very satisfied with the way the hanseboot has gone." Birthe Reimer, Niro Petersen: "We could not manage without hanseboot. Something that was particularly striking was the large number of Scandinavian visitors." Thomas Wibberenz, Proyacht, yacht equipment: "The two holidays during the hanseboot brought us a lot of new customers from Southern Germany." Eddy Eich, Peter Frisch GmbH: "There are some really fantastic German newbuilding projects for which we are providing the equipment, and the boats are getting bigger. The Live Deck is very popular - people come to us after tests there, and ask us specific questions on that." Rolf Clauss, Newport: "We have been at hanseboot for 25 years. People are specifically looking for quality again." Motors: Uwe-Jens Ramm, Nanni Diesel, boat and yacht motors: "Compared with last year, we have a double-digit growth rate in sales of motors. The hanseboot remains our Number One show in Germany." Bernhard Fründt, Volvo Penta: "Demand was lively. This year's hanseboot was better for us than last year." Charter: Christian Zaloudek, Sarres-Schockemöhle: "The last time we were here was in 2004. I like the concept better than before, with the central Caribbean Bar, and Cruise Consulting. The hanseboot is important for us to cultivate our image and gain new customers." Peter Herdan, Marine Yachting School Glücksburg, DHH: "This fair went well for us, as always. There is an increase in demand for courses for kids and teens." Various: Birgit Schnaase, Interior Design: "This is the first time that we have had our own stand at the hanseboot. The visitors there were exactly the people we wanted to reach." Jochen Kunzemann, Delius Klasing Publisher: "We were able to increase our sales volume significantly compared with last year." The next hanseboot, the 48th Hamburg International Boat Show, will be held from 27 October to 4 November 2007.
